Harpoon 3 Pro (H3Pro) features enhancements requested by our military customers. The most popular application is to extend modeling and simulation capabilities already in place. Existing simulation software tends to be precise and requires a commensurate level of staffing for effective use. When an analyst needs to take a broad look at a problem and run many scenarios, the “heavy” tools take too long and don't allow for adequate coverage.

H3 Pro runs at a lower fidelity, thus faster, and with a much smaller footprint. Hence, an analyst can survey a problem space quickly and easily and then bring the “heavy” tools to bear on a better defined problem.

Version 3.10 BETA

This version is available as of May 2009. Among the new features are programmable missions and tactics covering virtually any military situation, encrypted database preventing plagiarism, and a new mission capabilities including ship-to-ship, helicopter-to-ship and helicopter-to-ground-facility boarding simulating special operations. Other enhancements include new models for aircraft fuel consumption and combat parameters.

Examples:

  • Create a proposed ship, complete with radars, sonars and weapons suites, then take it to sea and engage enemy units using another human or the game's AI for the OppFor. For extended analysis, use the “Monte Carlo” feature for 1,000 runs.
  • Load GIS Shapefiles onto a map, then place a proposed airfield in a friendly country, place an appropriate OOB of aircraft, defense armament, sensors and magazines. Evaluate the base’s offensive value vs the cost of defending it. Export the results to an ODBC-compliant database for further analysis.
  • Create a new aircraft, define its performance, sensors and loadouts. Engage enemy land, sea and air targets to gauge its performance. Export the engagements to AGI’s Satellite Tool Kit (TM) for 3D analysis.

H3 Pro has the following features enabled when compared to ANW (v 3.10):

  • Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) Interface - This allows for simple geometric shapes to be imported from products such as ESRI's ArcInfo®.
  • Harpoon Track Interface (HTI) - All unit tracks can be exported to a standard database product and then to products such as STK’s Satellite Tool Kit®.
  • “Hot Washup” or “VCR” feature - Provides the ability for entire games to be recorded, viewed, edited and replayed.
  • Structured Query Language (SQL) - Harpoon 3 Pro supports Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
  • Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) Interface - An international standard used for simulations to communicate with each other in real time.
  • Source code can be licensed - Allows for security or validation purposes.
  • Umpire functionality - Provides the ability for a training professional to oversee training activities.
  • Batch Runs - Provides a “Monte Carlo” capability.
  • Documentation Polishing - Collecting and organizing documentation.
  • Damage Model - Custom damage models can now have more effects such as mission kills.
  • Attack Resolution Model - Attack resolution can now be handled by an external module. This handles everything in the terminal phase of an attack by missiles and torpedoes. As with the damage models, each platform can have its own model.

Enhancements underway:

  • More Protocol Data Units (PDU) - For increased interoperability with existing simulations.
  • Harpoon 5th Edition Models - Updates our algorithims to match the vetted Harpoon 5th Edition models.
  • Sensor API - Allows customers to interface into the sensor code.
  • Mission costing (e.g., fuel, weapons, unit losses).

Future Enhancements:

  • Offboard vehicles - Allows for remote vehicles, Special Forces
  • Land combat
  • Crew factors
  • Improved weather
  • Mine warfare
  • Search and Rescue

A Brief History

  • The Australian Department of Defense (ADOD) sponsored single-player changes to the game to create Harpoon 3 Pro v1.0. Later, they partnered with AGSI to create Harpoon 3 Multiplayer and Harpoon 3 Pro Multiplayer, which contributed to Harpoon 3 Professional v3.7.
  • Northrop Grumman, Maritime Integration Systems (Bethpage, New York) provided us with assistance to add Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) Support in v3.8.
  • ADOD engaged AGSI to extend the aircraft damage model in v3.9. Both ADOD and NGC participated in the Monte Carlo feature also added in v3.9.
  • AGSI implemented the Boarding and Mission Parameters feature in v3.10
